Which numbers should you enter?
The energy supplied by the food. Packaging may show calories as kcal and energy as both kcal and kJ. Use the kcal figure.
Protein supports muscle, organs and body repair. Foods such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans and lentils are common sources.
Carbohydrates include sugars and starches. They are found in foods such as bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit and sweets.
Fat contains more calories per gram than protein or carbohydrate. Oils, butter, cheese, nuts and fatty meats can therefore add up quickly.
Fibre is found mainly in plant foods and supports digestion. It may be listed separately from carbohydrates on UK food labels.
Check whether the packet values are listed per serving or per 100g. Entering the wrong option can significantly change the result.
Simple ways to improve your totals
Guessing portions is convenient, but using kitchen scales usually gives a more reliable result.
Milk, sugar, sauces, cooking oil, snacks and alcoholic drinks all contribute calories and are easy to overlook.
Cooking changes the water content and weight of food. Use nutrition information that matches whether the food was measured raw or cooked.
One unusually high or low day matters less than your average intake over several days.
Calorie counter FAQs
Do I need to enter every nutrient?
No. Calories are the only required nutrition value. Protein, carbohydrates, fat and fibre are optional, although entering them provides a more useful daily summary.
Should I use values per serving or per 100g?
Use whichever option matches the food label. Most UK food packaging provides values per 100g or 100ml, while some products also provide values for one serving.
Why are my calories different from the packet?
The packet may show calories for a different portion size. This calculator adjusts the nutrition values according to the amount you entered.
Are saved foods stored in an account?
No. Saved foods are stored locally in your browser. There is no account or sign-in, and foods saved on one device will not automatically appear on another.
What happens if I clear my browser data?
Clearing site data or browser storage may remove foods you have saved. Your saved list may also be unavailable when using a different browser or device.
How accurate are food-label calories?
Food labels provide useful estimates, but natural variation, recipe changes, cooking methods and portion measurements can affect the actual amount.
Why am I not losing weight at my calorie target?
Calorie needs and food intake are both estimates. Portions may be larger than recorded, activity may be lower than expected, or your maintenance needs may have changed. Look at your weight trend over several weeks rather than a few days.
Should I eat the same number of calories every day?
Not necessarily. Some people prefer a consistent daily target, while others eat slightly more on active days and less on quieter days. Your average intake over time is usually more important.
